Image Analysis

The image on the right is the new symbol Colorado is using to represent state friendly business, and are own state government. On the left is the traditional Colorado flag which they decided against using because they claimed it was easily confused with other states. A survey that was taken suggested that not enough people outside of the state were familiar with the simple C on the traditional flag, and confused it with California, or Chicago. As you can see the red C in the center of the flag is rather vague in describing anything in particular, and the same withe the stripes in the background. However the blue and white stripes are on key with the states beautiful blue mountains, and skies, which is very familiar to you if you live in the state. The yellow circle in the middle of the red C also suggest the colors of the awe inspiring sunsets, and sunrises Colorado is well known for. If you look into the flag, and are familiar with Colorado, it may be clear how the flag represents our state, but on a wide scale it may not be so easily recognizable. On the other hand the simple image on the left conveys much of the same messages about our state, in an again simple, but possibly more effective way. As you can see it says Colorado under the triangle, and the CO are in the middle if it as well. This way the first thing you think about when you see that image is our state. It also brings in familiar features of our landscape with the mountain that has a snow capped peak, and it centrally locates that as the focus of the image as well. The green color also shows the forward thinking that can be associated with our state, and reflects our overall environment friendly attitude. As simple as both these images are they convey messages about Colorado and what lies within.

  1. I just did a quick search on all of the other state flags and realized that I could identify very few of them. I like that the new logo idea has a cute depiction of a snow topped mountain peak, but overall it really seems kind of boring and generic. I grew up in Colorado so I'm pretty used to seeing our state flag everywhere as our state representation and I guess I'm just a little confused about why they would want to change it up now. I think it would be safe to assume that an incredibly large portion of Colorado's tourism money comes from people wanting to come see and enjoy the mountains, so I'm curious why the people pushing for this change in logo think that it would increase recognition and increase sales for Colorado brand items. I think the mountains pretty much speak for themselves in bringing people here and I don't see how changing the logo would change how people view our state. I personally like the state flag as our logo, to me it just seems a little more vibrant and attractive than the green and white proposed logo. It would be interesting to see if they've conducted research panels to see if people were more attracted to the new logo vs. the old one.

  2. I do not like the new state flag and logo at all. I agree that a change to the old logo and flag was a fine idea, but the new one is very boring and generic. Honestly it looks more like a symbol for children to represent something, not a symbol that would attract adult tourists. I feel it was a limited effort with only one mountain being represented, when Colorado is full of so much more for people to come see. The triangle reminds me of safety, it doesn't make me think of enjoyment or opportunity. Putting the name of the state and the abbreviation in the logo makes sense, and I am curious if other states are following this idea. I am just not a huge fan of how plain it is.
