Research Question

My research question is going to be is this new symbol and brand going to promote Colorado's state government, and state friendly brands more effectively than the Colorado flag. My gut feeling would tell me yes it does because it shows a mountain, along with the letter CO, and says Colorado under it. The flag only conveys a simple C in the middle so it is hard to decipher where that represents if you are not familiar with the flag, or the state.  The mountain is also one symbol that is associated with Colorado, especially for people within the state we know how much the mountains mean. I am interested to find out if this is more recognizable for others, and if it will more easily promote Colorado. The motto that goes along with this is " Its in out nature", and that seems to be an aspect of what their promoting too, along with their green symbol. I think some people would look at this as a waste of time and resources because the flag is already widely used, and at least some people already recognize it opposed to the brand new symbol.I could also see many agreeing with it though because it does more accurately portray our state, and what we stand for. I would like to find out why the state government and the governor put this plan into action, and what kind of research suggests that it will actually work. I am also interested to see what the residents of Colorado think about this, and whether its positive or negative.

  1. While this is an interesting thought I myself believe that the flag we currently have is not a brand for the state so we can sell our state. I think the cannabis debate has sufficiently done that for us. Not to mention the mountains and snow kinda sell themselves. I just see the flag as more of a historical symbol of our creation. being a young state compared to many others i think it is a symbol of our heritage and an omage to the natives who once lived here.

  2. I think that the flag and the new symbol for Colorado are two different things. The flag really represents our state and what it stands for. I just moved to Colorado about two years or so ago. I really fell in love with the flag here and see it everywhere. I think it's a great simple statement for us. On the other hand, I don't really like where they're going with this new logo. I wish you would have provided a picture with this post. I looked it up and I see that the new logo is very main stream. I feel like it's really trying to appeal to more people and they're going to use it a lot to get people to come visit Colorado. However, I don't think that's what the flag does.
Also, you didn't really provide us with a research question. What is the exact question you're really trying to pinpoint here? What is the big argument that is at hand? I'd like to see more posts about if this is controversial to anyone or not and more about your personal beliefs.

  3. Jackson,
I suppose I view this differently than you. I like that the new symbol has the mountains, and yes that is a very important part of Colorado, but the analysis behind the old flag, I think, is more effective.

It is pretty safe to say almost everyone in the United States knows Colorado has mountains. If they do not know that there are mountains it is probably because they are not interested in mountain activities. I think that is a pretty safe assumption. Yes, the new symbol emphasizes our mountains, but we are already known for that, instead the old flag brings so many other elements about Colorado.
Doing a quick Google search I found this website, and their analysis of the Colorado flag. "The colors in the Colorado state flag represent environmental features of the state. White symbolizes the snow on her mountains, gold acknowledges the abundant Colorado sunshine, red represents Colorado's red soil, and blue a symbol of her clear blue skies." (1) There is so much more to Colorado than just the mountains, and I think the flag as it is now, is a great representation of that.
